be wise when dating and you are older

Be Older AND Wiser

The great thing about online dating is that it caters for all ages.

You have the ability to meet that special someone, no matter where you are in life.

While everyone can use dating websites, seniors who aren’t used to using the internet for romance may need to bear a few things in mind.

Here are some online dating mistakes to avoid when looking for love online.

Be All Smiles and Don't Make Dating Mistakes

Being Dishonest

It might be tempting to put forward a version of yourself which isn’t entirely truthful when writing your profile.

It’s sure to backfire in the end.

If you’re not being honest, you’ll have less chance of meeting someone who is really right for you, and you’ll struggle to connect when you go on dates.

Put forward the best version of yourself.

But don’t tell fibs!

Using Inadequate Pictures

A good picture can be the difference between someone noticing you or not.

Looks aren’t everything, of course, but if you’re covered up with a hat or sunglasses, it’s hard for people to get an idea of what you look like.

Pictures with strange angles, shadows or saturated colours should also be avoided.

Not Performing Personalised Searches

It’s helpful to know exactly what you’re looking for when using dating websites as you’ll have a much better chance of finding the person you want.

Tailor your search results and you’ll be able to find someone much more quickly.

Otherwise, you run the risk of going on lots of dates which won’t lead anywhere.

Using The Wrong Website

As a senior entering the world of online dating, you’ll need to make sure you pick the right website.

Some websites are specifically for people in their golden years, while others cater more to young people.

However, websites like www.eharmony.com.au are able to welcome everyone, regardless of age.

Being Too Honest!

While it’s not a good idea to lie in your dating profile, it’s also not a good idea to share your life story.

This is the same when it comes to replying to messages. Be honest and upbeat when responding to people, but don’t go into too many details.

You’ll be able to share more with your match when you meet up in person.

Also make sure to try and choose the right photograph of yourself, one that is honest, but also leaves something to the imagination.

Divulging Personal Information

Unfortunately, there are lots of people on dating websites who aren’t who they say they are.

It’s not a good idea to share personal information on dating websites, including the information you send to people through messages.

This includes your email address, phone number, address or details of where you work.

Not Telling Family And Friends

It might seem a good idea to keep quiet about using online dating, especially if you fear the reaction of your children.

If you happen to meet someone special, it’ll be all the more shocking for them when things get serious.

Try and be honest with your family and friends – who knows, they may be able to help!

  1. Great tips! I think some of the tips are also applicable to younger people who are into online dating. We really need to be cautious in sharing information to people we have not met personally. Being too trusting is not a good idea when it comes to online dating.

    1. Welcome Tim – yeah, many of these areas apply equally to young and old.
What’s your feeling on this trust issue though – I mean, yeah sure, be wary before you meet someone but what then?
You meet them and where do you stand in trusting them? Fully? Partially? None?

  2. Very nice post..SOunds similar to my post about online dating.Well I should say that you should be careful on things that you have said and be careful on choosing who to fall for.

      1. hmmm..it’s not that being choosy or too serious on careful thing.I just meant to say being wise on especially when it is called ONLINE DATING.Because here in our country we have heard a lot of news about such thing like this and they end up failing or when they met up,we’ve heard that they are rape victim because of online dating.

  3. Great advice for anyone of any age group involved in online dating.

I met my husband online – 12 years ago! I took safety precautions – and thankfully things worked out fine.
You covered some need to know tips here. Awesome post :)

    1. Oh wow, didn’t know that Dana. Congrats to you and hubby.
Yeah, same for Pam and myself. I think it’s more common than people think but it really is just another form of dating and connecting, isn’t it?

  4. Well in my opinion the most important thing when you opt for online dating is that you have to be honest about everything if you are really looking for some serious relationships. That creates a lot of problems in future, so be honest and just show the other person what you really are.

    1. Honesty in any relationship is probably the most important factor, Abhishek.
Though in my opinion, FULL honesty would be rare on a first date. People find it very challenging to be fully open and honest with people they’ve never met before – lots of false bravado and ego comes into play. Is that your expereince?

  5. Hi Martin,

Thanks for the informative post. So many of us seniors are challenged when it comes to the internet. So every bit of wisdom we can share with our peers is a good thing, isn’t it? Keep up the good writing! :-)
