Long distance relationships - couple sitting near trees during golden hour

Editor: A good follow-up from our previous blog Can Long Distance Relationships Work as well as The Top 5 Ways To Make It In A Long Distance Relationship.

A Challenge That’s Worth the Distance

Be positive in everything you do.

Long-distance relationships can be very challenging, especially if you’re thousands of miles apart.

It’s hard to maintain a good relationship when the other person is away from you.

When you go to college, making a long-distance relationship work can be tough.

So here are some useful tips on how to make your relationship successful:

Display Your Love

Show your loved one how thoughtful and sweet you are.

Long Distance Relationships can Work

Every other week, try to send a handwritten love letter to your boyfriend or girlfriend.

A handwritten letter has a more personal touch compared to emails or text messages.

If you want to make it more romantic, try to write a poem, send some flowers, chocolates, or personalized gifts to make your loved one feel extra special.

Be Positive

Try to be positive in everything you do.

According to Dr. Gregory Guldner, author of the book “Long Distance Relationships: The Complete Guide,” couples who look at their separation from a positive view are more likely to make their long-distance relationship work.

Try to take advantage of nurturing your own personal growth such as studying in a good university.

You might be away from your special someone but it will still be a good thing for you both.

Busy, Busy, Busy

Keep yourself busy.

Try to keep yourself busy while waiting for your boyfriend or girlfriend’s call or message.

You can keep yourself more productive and busy by joining organizations, or spending time with your friends, or simply by studying hard.

Such activities will help divert your attention and reduces the loneliness you may feel in the absence of your loved one.

Keep To The Plan, Stan

Schedule dates and plan visits.

Remember all the special dates you’ve scheduled such as anniversaries or birthdays.

Take some effort to visit your boyfriend or girlfriend as scheduled.

Setting up the dates in advance will keep you both excited and therefore, look forward to seeing each other again.

Remember Facetime Too

You can also plan some visits during vacations and think of fun and worthwhile activities to keep you both happy.

Take note that making long distance relationships work takes a lot of effort, commitment, and determination.

  1. Long distance relationship takes time to get over with or to cope with. Over the time mostly, people get used to it. But the earlier days are going to be tough.

    1. Thanks for stopping in and commenting, Jane.
Long distance relationships can be frightfully frustrating. I’ve been there myself with Pam. It can be really tough and challenging, especially when you’ve been used to close physical contact in all previous relationships.
You can overcome these adversities though, if you have a solid understanding of the pitfalls and how to overcome them though.

  2. Hi
I have gone through this article and am here to say that the article is very rich. My own contribution base on distance relationship is that it is to be build on trust. Trust is the key towards distance relationship because if you are far from each other and you don't trust him/her you cannot also believe him. so many things may have gone wrong in any distance relationship but i assure you that with trust on both side, you can build a more stronger relationship.

    1. Welcome and thanks for the comment, Esther.
For sure, trust is key to a lasting relationship. That includes and is especially true of long distance relationships. Interestingly, long distance relationships can be strained in the trust department since things can be misunderstood easier through a lack of presence. That is certainly a lesson Pam and I learnt when we were in an LDR. Takes time and effort.

  3. Hi,

I'm the developer of the JustUs iPhone app that was mentioned above..

I love the post, and you are certainly right, to be in a long distance relationship requires a lot of work from both of the sides, like everything else in our life that we want to succeed.

From the research me and my partner conduct we found that 41% of couples regularly send text messages, emails, and use social media sites like FB even when they are together! So when you think about it, with today's technology there are some ways to fill the gap in the long distance relationship. Just imagine how it was 20 years ago…

    1. Thanks for commenting, fairy86

Kind of a lack of information in a short comment though.
Are you having sexual relations at the moment though? I'd suggest it really is a chemisty thing though. If it feels the right thing to do at the time, sex is the right thing. If you're still not up to the sexual part of your relationship, take it slow and be mindful of each other's feelings and talk about sex and how you both feel about it.

It's a wonderful area of a relationship and having said that, it needs to be the right time for both of you.

  4. Hi..

A relationship of this kind can be very fulfilling if both of the sides put their effort and time into it! the most important thing is to be committed, open and work on it all the time!

    1. Hey there Ariel & Liza.
Great to see you stopping by here.

Personally, many people including myself view a long distance relationship as a no-go – something they've probably never contemplated before and therefore shy away from experiencing it. When two people 'click', despite distance, nothing else should matter to move forward in looking to make it work. Obviously other things might get in the way – distance shouldn't be one of them.
